What makes someone a fool?
I think that the primary thing that makes someone a fool is their unshakable conviction that they are wise.
Wise people do not view themselves as wise. They don’t view themselves as knowing a lot. They don’t view themselves as being more intelligent than others.
And it is because of this sense of humility that they are wise. Because they’re always open to learning new things.
They’re open to new information. They’re willing to question what they know, to reconsider their beliefs and their opinions—so that they can grow in understanding.
They are not attached to any worldview, ideology, belief system. And this keeps them always growing.
Whereas foolish people are stuck. They do not grow, they do not learn, they do not develop their understanding.
How can they develop it if they think that they know everything? If they think that they are absolutely right? If they think that they are better than everyone else?
It is impossible.
Learning requires humility, openness, willingness to change.
So if you want to avoid being a fool, question what you know and be open to learning new things.
