What is our purpose in life?
For millennia, philosophers have provided plenty of different answers to this question. And today I would like to offer mine:
Our purpose in life is to enrich life.
If you study the evolution of life, you will see that pretty much every species that has existed on Earth has contributed in one way or another to life’s increasing complexity. That’s why, as more and more species appeared in this world over the course of billions of years, the more alive, conscious, sentient and beautiful the world came to be.
Of course, if we consider how humanity is behaving today, we might think that our purpose is not to enrich life, but to exploit and destroy it – for that’s exactly what we as a collective are doing, day in, day out.
But to me, that’s only because we have lost touch with our true purpose, which is to create and serve – not destroy and exploit. And our biggest challenge right now is to rediscover and follow our purpose. It is to join the rest of life by contributing our unique gifts to it – gifts that add to the beauty and wonder of the world.
As someone once said:
“The meaning in life is to find our gift,
and the purpose of life is to share it.”
So, what is your gift or set of gifts? Whatever that is, be sure to share it with the world, for that’s what you’re here to do.
