“The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.” ~Morpheus, The Matrix
Think how most people live: they force themselves to wake up early, get dressed, drive to some workplace, spend eight hours or more doing work they hate, drive back home, surf the Internet or watch TV, and then go to sleep—only to repeat the same routine the next day, almost for the rest of their lives.
In our culture, we consider this kind of living normal, even healthy—but if you stop and think about it, it’s not healthy at all. Rather, it’s sick.
Life can be immensely beautiful, yet instead of living it in joy and contentment, we often waste it in suffering and misery. That’s because we’ve been programmed to believe this is the only way to live. Habits, traditions, and dogmatic beliefs have turned us into mindless automatons, following a predetermined path forced upon us.
This programming, however, can be broken—if we realize it’s in our hands to change the way we live and gather enough courage to rebel against the sickness of our culture. If you feel ready to embark on a journey of liberation and discovery, here are the eight most important things you can do right now to deprogram yourself and escape the matrix you’ve been trapped in since the day you were born.
1. Break the shackles of dogmatic religion
Dogmatic, organized religion imposes on people what to think and what not to think, what is good and what is bad, what is right and what is wrong.
As a result, it prevents people from living spontaneously, listening to their hearts, seeking the truth, and drawing their own conclusions through critical thinking and personal experience. It also divides people into opposing ideological groups, setting them against each other in the name of God or Truth.
The result? Tremendous emotional suppression, conflict, and suffering.
To reclaim your freedom, express your authenticity, and walk the path of peace, joy, and wisdom, break the chains of dogmatic religion by questioning it and starting your quest for the truth from scratch.
2. Stop blindly obeying external authority
As children, most of us were taught to doubt ourselves and do only what external authorities commanded. Now, as adults, we no longer trust ourselves and let others take responsibility for our lives.
For example, we support corrupt politicians who do nothing but lie to us to satisfy their hunger for power, under the illusion that we’re choosing a brighter future for ourselves. In reality, the options offered by our pseudodemocratic system are extremely limited and, in most cases, very similar.
If you want to create true positive change in the world, stop blindly obeying external authority or waiting for someone to save you, and start taking responsibility into your own hands. Additionally, consider joining a community of like-minded individuals to work together in building a political system that serves all people, not just the 1%.
3. Question the dominant economic system
In our global economic system, money is created out of debt—that is, it is essentially loaned into existence by banks with interest attached. This means that there is always more debt than money in the economy, forcing people to compete for never enough and resulting in economic inequality, disease, and violence.
Additionally, this system is based on consumption: people must constantly buy and sell in order for money to keep circulating and, consequently, for people to remain employed. This drives the overextraction of natural resources and produces massive amounts of toxic waste, threatening the very planet on which we depend and which we share with countless other beings.
If you agree that our economic system is harmful and would like to help change it, consider further researching its negative impacts and educating yourself on alternative, socially just, and environmentally sustainable economic systems. (I recommend this article for a more in-depth understanding of how our economic system works and how it can be changed.)
4. Detach yourself from consumerism
Raised in a consumer culture, most of us have been conditioned to believe that money can buy everything we need, including happiness. As a result, we keep buying products and services, only to end up feeling dissatisfied and craving more.
While shopping in this system can provide the material resources we need to meet our basic needs, beyond that, it offers only temporary and superficial substitutes for what we truly long for—which is not products or services but heart-opening experiences, such as intimacy with others and connection with the natural world.
Once you realize this, you’ll stop worrying about the next “best” thing to buy and start investing your time and energy in what truly matters for your well-being.
5. Beware of the media
Knowledge is power, yet we are drowning in an ocean of information.
Corporate media often presents misleading information to manipulate how we think and behave. Sadly, most people rarely realize this and end up becoming cogs in the wheel of a propaganda machine, filling their minds with lies and half-truths.
Truth seekers don’t accept anything on belief alone. Instead, they look for evidence to support the information they’re presented with—and if none exists, they don’t consider it true or valid. They also strive to develop a well-rounded understanding of any topic by consulting as many different—even opposing—sources as possible.
If you don’t like being deceived, misled, or controlled—and sincerely want to better understand what’s happening in the world—expose yourself to a wide range of information sources and use critical thinking to draw your own conclusions. Seeking the truth is an arduous path, but it is absolutely worth it.
6. Choose your food carefully
Is what you eat contributing to your health, or is it poisoning your body and mind? Is the production of the food you consume humane and environmentally sustainable, or does it harm society, animals, and the rest of the natural world?
These are important questions everyone should ask themselves. Most people, however, consume foods containing processed sugar and artificial preservatives, as well as animal-derived products, unaware that these foods can be extremely harmful to themselves and others. For example, their dietary choices contribute to the suffering and death of around a hundred billion land animals and well over a trillion marine animals each year, with profoundly negative effects on our planetary ecosystem.
If you don’t want to engage in such cruel, unhealthy, and anti-environmental behavior, choose your food carefully. I assure you, this is one of the most impactful things you can do for both yourself and the planet.
7. Read eye-opening books
Most people associate books with school, and for that reason, they have developed a distaste—or even hatred—for reading.
But here is the truth they ignore: many wise individuals have written books sharing their thoughts on life’s problems and how to effectively deal with them. They frequently critique society’s failings and offer profound insights on how we could help create a more beautiful world. Books can therefore be immensely helpful in opening our eyes and improving the quality of our lives.
To get the most out of reading, don’t just pick any book. Choose books that challenge your opinions and beliefs, as well as provide new perspectives on life to help you better understand yourself and the world.
8. Develop mindfulness
Lastly, developing awareness of the present moment is essential for breaking free from social conditioning, because awareness allows us to respond consciously and spontaneously to what happens, rather than reacting unconsciously or out of habit.
So, how can you develop awareness? Through meditation. There are many powerful meditation methods available, so do some research, choose the ones that feel right for you, and practice them consistently until you see positive results.
In addition to developing awareness, a meditation practice can help quiet your chattering mind. This will not only allow you to discover a sense of inner peace but also reveal that you are intrinsically connected with the rest of life, rather than being a separate, isolated ego. As a result, you’ll begin to feel at home with existence, as well as to show compassion toward other people and the planet—the very opposite of what our fiercely competitive, anti-environmental society has conditioned us to do.
(Note: According to research, some people can be negatively affected by meditation practices. This often appears to be related to unresolved emotional trauma. If you think that you may be one of them, perhaps it would be best to first address any serious psychological issues you’re struggling with through some form of therapy.)
